PRIVATE LOCATES

Private locating is the final step before ground disturbance — and where underground strike risk can still be reduced. Our certified technicians take on three roles aligned with the NAPUA (North American Private Utility Association) framework:

Locate beyond public locate scope — private water, sewer, gas runs to outbuildings, irrigation, septic, geothermal, and low-voltage lines that public locates don't cover.

Verify public locates when something looks off — catching incomplete or mismatched markings before they become strikes.

Identify locate risk before ground disturbance — assessing proximity, depth uncertainty, and congested zones so your crew can plan their approach.

Using advanced detection equipment, we mark private utilities with color-coded paint and flags to create a precise subsurface map — protecting your project from service disruptions, delays, and unexpected repair costs.

Ontario One Call requirement: Public utilities must still be marked through Ontario One Call before excavation begins. Our private locates complement that to give you complete underground awareness.

SUE LEVEL B & A Investigations

When precision is non-negotiable, Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) represents the industry's highest standard in underground utility mapping. SUE applies at the design phase of a project — delivering engineer-certified documentation that planners, engineers, and asset owners can build from with confidence.

R&B Locating is fully authorized by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) to conduct certified Quality Level B and Quality Level A SUE investigations in compliance with ASCE 38, the recognized benchmark for subsurface utility data collection and visualization.

Quality Level B — Designating Utilities horizontally located using surface geophysical methods, then integrated into engineering deliverables for design use.

Quality Level A — Locating Utilities precisely located in three dimensions through controlled exposure (vacuum excavation) and survey-grade measurement — the highest level of certainty available.

SUE informs design. Private locating governs safe execution. Together, SUE and private locating cover the full project lifecycle — from drawing board to ground disturbance — forming a complete risk-management framework for owners, engineers, and contractors.

For projects where accuracy is critical and the margin for error is zero, our SUE services provide the certified underground intelligence needed to make informed decisions, mitigate risk, and protect assets throughout the project lifecycle.

UTILITY MAPPING

Turn what's underground into a documented record. R&B Locating compiles findings from private locates, public locate reports, SUE investigations, and historical documentation into a single digital map of your site's subsurface infrastructure.

Our process:

Research — historical records, as-built drawings, utility plans, and prior locate reports are reviewed and consolidated into a baseline.

Field investigation — utilities are detected, marked, and measured to verify existing records and capture what's missing.

Documentation — findings are compiled into a digital map that integrates seamlessly with your existing survey or CAD data.

The result is a single source of truth for the infrastructure beneath your site — supporting design decisions, project planning, and every ground disturbance to follow.

For project teams, mapping eliminates conflicts before they reach the field. For property and asset owners, it converts unknowns into documented records — reducing the risk profile of every future project on the site.

ONECALL TICKET MANAGEMENT

Streamline your public utility locate requests with our OneCall Ticket Management service, offered in collaboration with DigRight.ca.

The Ontario One Call system ensures utility owners are notified — but sorting through scattered responses, chasing late providers, and verifying completeness eats time most project teams don't have. Our service takes that workload off your plate.

How it works: When you submit a request through our system, our team:

  • Reviews your request and submits it into the public locate system

  • Ensures utility companies are properly notified of your work

  • Tracks incoming responses and follows up with late providers

  • Reviews all locates for completeness and accuracy

  • Delivers one clean, easy-to-read report with every locate in one place

For ongoing projects: We manage timely renewals before locates expire, keeping your project continuously compliant and your crews protected from working on outdated information.

This service supports safer excavation by ensuring nothing falls through the cracks in the public locate process — reducing the risk of strikes that lead to service disruptions, project delays, and unexpected repair costs.

One request in. One organized report out. No paperwork in between.
